Wireless Etiquette

A little while ago I taught classes to women at the annual You Deserve It event on how to use technology to organize your personal and professional life. The class was really targeted around the benefits of using a Blackberry. I received a number of questions but the one thing that kept coming up over and over was “is there a place where you can read about wireless etiquette?

There is a whole group of people who are resisting wireless technology because they are really turned off by the behaviors of some of the people around them. Therefore, I present to you five tips that I will help anyone using a wireless phone so that they can be less offensive to the people around them.

  1. CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW!
Use a normal tone of voice when speaking. For some reason people speak louder when they are talking on their wireless phone. It is as though they think they have to compensate for the background noise around them. What happens is everyone around can hear your conversation and frankly it is very annoying. So next time you are in a public voice be conscious of your tone of voice.
  2. “I KISSED A GIRL AND I LIKED IT…”
Turn off your funky ring tone in public. Although “I kissed a girl and I liked it” is your favorite song, it is not everyone’s favorite song. When your phone rings in a restaurant, store or the theater loudly playing your favorite song you are being disruptive to those around you. Couple that with a loud tone of voice and you start to look like the person in the building with the least amount of etiquette. Put your phone in your pocket and put it on vibrate. You won’t miss the call and you will be at least 50% more respectful to those around you when you answer.
  3. YOU ARE NOT AS IMPORTANT AS YOU THINK – AND THAT’S OK
When you are in the middle of something with another person, live in your space, I can assure you the next email on your Blackberry is not life threatening. There is nothing that can damage a relationship more than making someone feel like they are not important when they are interacting with you. Next time you are in a meeting, or out for lunch with a friend try to be aware of how unimportant you make them feel when the biggest concern of the day for you is reading the next email that arrived. I can assure you if it is an emergency someone will call you.
  4. POLITE MODE, PLEASE
Use the off button. If you are attending a meeting at work or you are attending some facilitated training, the most annoying thing you can do to the person presenting is pay more attention to your phone than them. My advice for all people who are presenting is to start the meeting by asking everyone to turn their phones off or to have everyone leave them in a bin at the door and pick them up when they go on break. This is one way to ensure that you have people’s attention and that someone else is not rudely disrupting the entire group.
  5. SAFETY FIRST
Get a blue tooth headset or visor. There is nothing worse that being cut off on the highway because someone was talking on the phone. Talking and texting while driving will soon cause more deaths on our roads than drinking and driving if people do not start changing behaviors. Many provinces and states are banning the use of wireless phones when driving. Do yourself a favor, your family and friends favor – DO NOT TEXT WHILE DRIVING!

Now these are my five rules that can make you a more likable wireless phone user. The only other comment I will add is there are some people in life who just lack judgement. They are the people who are usually always rude, always in your face and just plain offensive to begin with. These rules are not for them. It is too late I am afraid to make them actually care about others. However if you are not part of this small minority, I hope this can help you to be more self aware and a more likable wireless user!

Time Management

Looking for a device that allows you to manage calendar and contacts more efficiently? Of course you are – who isn’t?  Here are two two questions to ask for when shopping for a wireless device:

1. What devices do you carry that allow me to synchronize with Outlook besides a Data Device?
2. Do those devices come with the software and cables that I will require?

A couple of devices that I can suggest that allow you to do this are the Motorola Krazr and the new Motorola Razr2. Both of these products come with software called Motorola Tools (which is very easy to install and use) and a cable that allows you to connect your handset to your computer and voila, synchronize your life.

This program will allow you to upload your calendar, your contacts phone numbers and email addresses, music, and photos. Your phone will then prompt you to remember to do the things that are programmed on your computer by sounding a reminder alarm, just like Outlook does.

No longer do you have to rely on copying down in a heavy agenda all of the appointments you have logged in your computer, now all you have to do is keep your handset and your computer in synch and you will always know what you have on the go for the day, the week, the month and the year!

In addition both of these handsets have expandable memory allowing you to also replace your MP3 player with your mobile handset as you can store literally thousands of songs and photos on your handset.

So if you are looking to get better organized this year, consider these options when shopping for your next wireless device. Concerned about the software installation and first time synchronization? No problem, the PARLEZ WIRELESS Super Gang can help.

Warranty – What is Not Covered?

In the wireless industry when a consumer selects a new handset, often they receive a discount off of the suggested retail price because of the length of the contract term that they have signed. In some cases because the consumer is getting their handset for free or for a low entry level cost, the perceived value is also low.

Every new wireless handset comes with a one year manufacturer’s warranty. This means that the manufacturer, not the wireless carrier, is giving you a warranty on your new handset. It is similar to when you buy a new car. If you bought a car from Car Canada and the car is a Honda, it is Honda, not Car Canada that is providing you with the warranty.

And much the same as the car industry, you are still responsible for your monthly car payment when you damage your car. And if you damage your car, the warranty does not cover the damage you have caused, and in most cases neither does your insurance company without you paying a deductible and you also receiving increased premiums.

The easiest way to differentiate between a warranty defect and damage is this:

  1. If the item caused the problem on its own, it is a defect and is usually covered under the manufacturer’s warranty.
  2. If you caused the problem, it is considered damage and you are responsible for the repair.

Some common examples of damage that appear in the wireless industry are as follows:

Some common examples of damage that appear in the wireless industry are as follows:

Physical damage

i. Dropped handset and broke screen

ii. Dropped handset and broke antenna

iii. Sat on handset and damaged lcd

iv. Dropped or stepped on handset and broke flip

Liquid damage

i. Dropped handset and broke screen

ii. Dropped handset in toilet, pool or other body of water

iii. Threw water bottle into purse or bag and it leaked on handset

iv. Left handset outside in very cold temperatures and caused condensation when brought into warm environment

v. Used handset outside when it was raining

vi. Droped handset in snow

vii. Left car charger on floor of car in winter, got it covered in melted snow and then plugged it into handset

When you bring a handset into your wireless provider because it is not working properly the team members are taught to look for these things prior to sending the handset out for warranty repair.

Team members are taught to look for signs of physical damage as well as liquid damage. Physical damage is easy to see, and for those who are trained so is liquid damage. Every handset comes with a litmus strip on the inside where the battery connects. If this litmus strip has changed colour or is missing, the handset is automatically deemed liquid damaged and the manufacturer voids your warranty. If there are any signs of corrosion on the charging ports, it is also considered liquid damage and the warranty is voided.

The manufacturer will charge the consumer for improper diagnosis. If for example a customer insists the phone did not come in contact with liquid but the signs are there, and the team member sends it out for repair, the minimum cost to the consumer is about $60 just for the manufacturer to confirm what the team member has already told you in the store. This does not include the repair cost!

So protect your phone much the way you would protect your home computer or your car. The better care you provide this piece of electronics, the better it will work for you.

And in the event your handset is damaged beyond economical repair, look for a used or refurbished phone which can usually be purchased at a fraction of the cost of a new phone for the duration of your contract.

GPS on my Phone!

Wireless Companies are now integrating GPS services onto their handsets to provide their clients with yet another service that can make your life a bit easier.

You can opt to use a service such as Google Maps on your Blackberry or PDA which allows you to search for directions similar to using Google Maps on your home computer. You will be provided with a map and written directions to help you get to your destination.

Now if you are looking for something even cooler TELUS Navigator is that option. This is a new GPS Service that is offered on certain devices and it is very cool. TELUS Navigator allows you to find your current destination if you do not know where you are, and it will also allow you to find directions to the next destination. However, much like GPS in your car, the phone will talk to you and guide you directly to your location. Another cool thing, you get to choose whether you want a male or a female voice!

You can also use this feature to conduct a search of the area you are in. It is a fast way to find:

  • Eating and drinking establishments
  • Gas stations
  • Banks
  • Movie Theatres
  • Hotels & Motels
  • Emergency
  • Airport
  • And more…

Once you find what you are looking for it is a simple click to get directions to that location. This is an amazing feature for those people living in or travelling to a larger city where you are not familiar with where you are going. Using a GPS Navigator can minimize the stress of finding what you are looking for. If you would like to see how this works, or if you have questions please visit Lisa, Your Wireless Wonder Woman and the rest of the PARLEZ WIRELESS suger gang.

Why Is My Wireless Bill So High?

Consumers shopping for a wireless rate plan are always looking for the “best deal”. They want the plan that is going to cost them the least amount each month. I hear it all the time, I have 200 minutes, free evenings and weekends, voicemail and call display and it only costs me $20 per month. “Yeah right.”

The Average Revenue Per Unit reported in Q2 2007 for TELUS was $57.07. That means the average consumer spent almost $60 for their monthly wireless bill.

The majority of those consumers most likely are on the great rate plan described above and are paying $0.35 per minute for the additional 100 minutes that they are using, or an additional $35 per month. The problem is most consumers do not understand how to read their wireless bill and are in denial about how much they actually use their cell phone.

Save money in 2008! Take a look at your cell phone bills from 2007. Don’t just look at one, look at several. Take a look at your included minutes, and your chargeable minutes. Are you going over every month? If so, by how many minutes? Figure out what your averages are and instead of looking for the “best deal” go look for a rate plan that matches what your average usage is. You will save money, I guarantee it.

If you are not going over consider yourself one of the lucky consumers. Most of the consumers that we help save money have been over spending for months. Don’t become a statistic, take a look at your bill, and if you need help, ask. If you can’t get the type of help you need from the person who sold you your phone let me know, we offer complimentary rate plan analysis to anyone who asks. But don’t be one of those consumers who pay too much in 2008, take control of your cell bill without compromising your usage.

An Introduction to Wireless

Years ago it was only the elite who could afford to carry a wireless device. In 1997 two new players launched PCS service in Canada, Clearnet and Fido. These two carriers were about to transform the wireless industry in Canada.

They introduced concepts like per second billing, rate plans starting at $20 per month and elimination of contract terms making wireless an affordable option for the average consumer. A lot has changed in ten years. TELUS acquired Clearnet and Rogers acquired Fido, however the industry has remained as competitive as ever.

For a consumer, it is important to know what you are looking for when shopping for a wireless phone. Here are some key tips for when you are doing your competitive shopping:

1. Be prepared to discuss how you plan to use your phone. If you currently have a wireless phone, bring a copy of your monthly bill with you so that you can match your rate plan to your usage instead of picking any plan which could incur you many additional charges. Be prepared to answer questions such as:

a. Do you require unlimited evenings, nights and weekends
b. Are most of your calls incoming or outgoing?
c. Do you have a set number of people you call more than others?

If you are not being asked these types of questions, chances are you are going to end up on the wrong rate plan. There are hundreds of plans to choose from, it is crucial that you are able to select the one that is best suited to your needs for optimum savings.

2. Select a rate plan that is slightly higher than what your estimated usage is. If you pick the “next plan up” it will most likely cost you around $5 more and include anywhere from 50 to 100 additional minutes. If you stick with the base plan and go over by 100 minutes it is going to cost you approximately $35 as the average monthly overage charge is $0.35 per minute. An extra five bucks is worth the added security!

3. Expect to pay for the features that you pay for on your home phone such as voicemail, call display, text messaging etc. If you like the added features consider bundles where you can also save money. For example, voicemail is $6, call display is $6, unlimited text messaging is $10 but for $15 you can get a bundle that includes all of this and more.

4. Expect to pay service fees. You can expect to pay $35 to $40 for an activation fee, $25 to $30 for an equipment exchange fee, and $5 to $15 for a phone book transfer. In most organizations employees are not authorized to waive these fees. Your option is usually to defer payment to your next monthly invoice or pay in store.

5. Expect to keep your phone number. Local number portability means that you can transfer your home phone number, your business phone number or your wireless phone number to any telephone carrier you chose. Make sure you know the terms and conditions of your contract as this can cost you up to $20 times the number of months remaining in your contract. Once you move your number it is too late to avoid this cancellation fee.

A competitive industry means that consumers have to be savvy about how they shop. These five tips should arm you with enough information to make a sound buying decision. If you have any other questions or topics that you would like answered please let me know
